Cheap Windows Activation Keys: Windows Activation Scams, and License Types Explained
We recently lost a major laptop order to a long-time customer – a veteran CIO. Our competitor offered the same brand and specifications at a price ₹6,000 lower per unit. Naturally, the CIO assumed we were overcharging.
Thankfully, due to our trusted relationship, he gave us a chance to explain.

After closely examining the competitor’s quote, we found that the only difference was the Windows license type. We had quoted for a factory pre-installed license, while the competitor offered an OEM version—which can cost anywhere from ₹150 to ₹10,000.
When we pointed this out, the CIO confidently replied, “The license activates, I have an invoice with a sticker, and I comply with ISO27001 standards.” On paper, everything checked out. But was it worth the risk?
This incident raises a critical question: How do you know if your Windows is genuine or cracked?
How to Check If Your Windows is Genuine or Cracked
Here are three simple ways to verify your Windows activation status:
Method 1: Check from Settings
1️⃣ Go to Settings → System → Activation
2️⃣ Check the Activation State:
- “Windows is activated with a digital license” → ✅ Genuine
- “Windows is not activated” → ❌ Possibly cracked or invalid
Method 2: Use Command Prompt (Highly Important) 1️⃣ Open Command Prompt (Run as Administrator)
2️⃣ Type: slmgr /dli
and press Enter
3️⃣ A pop-up will show your activation type:
- Retail → ✅ Genuine
- OEM → ✅ Pre-installed by Manufacturer
- Volume/KMS → ⚠️ Business license (not for resale)
- Not activated → ❌ Possibly cracked
Method 3: Use ShowKeyPlus App
1️⃣ Download ShowKeyPlus from the Microsoft Store
2️⃣ Run the app and check your key type:
- Retail or OEM → ✅ You’re safe!
- Volume/KMS → ⚠️ Might be an unauthorized business key!

Where Do These Cheap Keys Come From?
1. Volume License Keys (VLK) Misuse
Large companies, schools, and government organizations buy Volume License Keys (VLKs) to activate multiple devices under one agreement. These keys are not meant for individual resale, but shady sellers illegally sell them as single-use keys. Microsoft monitors activations, and if they detect misuse, they can deactivate the key anytime.
2. OEM Keys from Old or Recycled Devices
Some sellers extract OEM keys from discarded or refurbished laptops and resell them. If Microsoft detects an OEM key being used on a new system, it may stop working.
3. MAK & KMS Exploits
MAK (Multiple Activation Key)
- A type of Volume License allowing a company to activate a limited number of devices.
- Scammers obtain unused MAK keys and sell them until Microsoft blocks them.
- Once blocked, your Windows loses activation status.
KMS (Key Management Service)
- If Microsoft detects this, Windows deactivates and the system may get flagged.
- A server-based activation method for large companies that auto-renews every 180 days.
- Hackers use fake KMS servers to trick Windows into thinking it’s activated.
- Your system might show “activated”, but it’s essentially running pirated Windows.
Why Businesses Should Avoid Cheap Windows Licenses ?
For individuals, losing an activation key might be a minor issue. But for businesses, using non-genuine licenses can lead to serious risks:
- Legal & Compliance Violations – Businesses using fake or misused licenses violate Microsoft’s Terms of Service, risking fines or legal action.
- Security Risks – Pirated or tampered Windows versions may have backdoors or malware, putting sensitive company data at risk.
- Unexpected Deactivation – Microsoft regularly blocks invalid keys, leading to sudden deactivation and workflow disruptions.
- No Official Support – Microsoft doesn’t provide updates or security patches for non-genuine Windows, making systems vulnerable to cyber threats.
Final Thoughts: Is It Worth the Risk?
Yes, you may find a Windows key for ₹150-₹400, but is it worth putting your business reputation, security, and compliance at risk? For individuals, these cheap keys are a gamble. For businesses, they can lead to serious legal and operational risks.
Invest in a genuine Windows license – it’s worth it in the long run.
